Bookbinding & Calligraphy Taster Sessions
Saturday 11th June

Shepherds Bookbinders are planning an unusual and interesting initiative to introduce younger people to the craft of bookbinding.
In conjunction with the V&A Museum, Shepherds have recently devised a bookbinding kit which serves as a quick and creative way to get a taste for this fascinating craft.

Shepherds will be demonstrating how this kit works and invite customers who are bringing their families to the book fair to sign up their children (10 years or older) to this quick course – each session will last around 30 minutes.
The bookbinding kits will be on sale for just £15 each and on-site tuition is free.

Similarly, Sharon Shaw, a freelance calligrapher will be on hand to teach visitors (especially children) how to write their name in italics. Those who have just bound their first book on the Shepherds stand, could even title it with Sharon’s help.

These services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents and guardians that are not participating can watch their children from the comfort of the adjoining café, enjoying a coffee or perhaps something stronger from the bar if preferred!

ABOUT SHEPHERDS:
Shepherds is home to two of London's oldest and most prestigious bookbinding companies, Zaehnsdorf (est.1842) and Sangorski & Sutcliffe (est.1901). The binderies were taken over by Shepherds in 1998 and the bindery now trades under the single name of Sangorski & Sutcliffe. These two old London binderies are widely acknowledged as two of the most important hand-bookbinding companies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
