Downstairs at the Antiquarian Book Fair
Following the success of opening Downstairs at the Antiquarian Book Fair in 2009, the 2010 Fair again offers exhibition space to
bookbinders, private presses and other affiliated trades plus a cafe, bar, lecture theatre and seating area.
The cafe offers a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals throughout the Fair opening hours.
The bar opens at lunchtime each day.

Introduction to Book Collecting

Mr Jolyon Hudson, Marlborough Rare Books
Jolyon Hudson started as an auction porter in 1976 eventually becoming a director and auctioneer for Christie’s. In 1992 he left Christie's to become manager of Pickering & Chatto and in 2006 he also became manager of Marlborough Rare Books. Jolyon will give an overview of the reasons people collect antiquarian books and advice on how to start a collection.
This lecture is an ideal starting point for the new collector.
There will be time after the lecture for any questions.

Mr Rick Gekoski, R.A. Gekoski Booksellers
Rick Gekoski - described by Tatler as “think Bill Bryson.... only on books” - is a rare book dealer, writer, and occasional broadcaster.
An American who came to England in 1966, Rick studied a B. Phil and D.Phil. in English at Oxford. From 1971-1987 he was a member of the English Department of the University of Warwick, and sometime Chairman of the Faculty of Arts. He now runs R.A. Gekoski Booksellers in London.
The lecture will refer to his book “Tolkien's Gown and Other Stories of Great Authors and Rare Books”, a collection of essays, based on his BBC Radio 4 Series- Rare Books, Rare People.

Mr Edward Bayntun-Coward, George Bayntun
Edward Bayntun-Coward is the owner of George Bayntun, the bookshop and bindery founded in Bath by his great-grandfather in 1894. It incorporates the bindery of Robert Riviere, founded in Bath in 1829.
Bayntun-Riviere is now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership, continuing to bind entirely by hand.
