Going Behind the AbeBooks Website

This year is thrilled to be the official partner of the ABA London International Antiquarian Book Fair. We’ve been helping collectors find and buy rare books for more than 20 years now, but have you ever wondered about what goes on behind our websites?

We have two offices. Our headquarters are located in Victoria, British Columbia in Canada. This is where the company was founded in 1995 when the frustrated owner of a secondhand bookshop wondered if the Internet could be used to help people find out-of-print books. Our European office is located in Düsseldorf, Germany. In all, we employ around 135 people in finance, customer service, marketing and a wide variety of technical roles ranging from software development to operations.

AbeBooks is pure online marketplace with the seller sending the book directly to the buyer after we facilitate the sale. But doesn’t mean we are not interested in books. The sale of an expensive item, especially if it’s unique or particularly noteworthy, is celebrated. There are daily conversations with booksellers, ranging from marketing staff learning about particular books to assistance provided by customer service. Inside our offices, you will see shelves filled with technology textbooks, business manuals, and books about books, books about authors, and books about artists that help marketers do their work. We know that one of the best ways to learn… is to read a book.

Our staff regularly visit bookshops and book fairs around the world (we’re looking forward to visiting Olympia) in order to stay in touch with the seller community. In fact, supporting book communities is important to us. Our community forums are heavily used by buyers and sellers from many countries. More conversation about books can be found on our Facebook pages and other areas of social media. We’re proud to support the York Antiquarian Bookselling Seminar, and sponsor numerous book fairs and rare book events around the world.

And finally, AbeBooks is a global business and that includes our employees – walk into either office and you will hear numerous languages. French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin and Cantonese is spoken alongside the English of Americans, Brits and Canadians, with a number of other nationalities also present.

See you at Olympia.
