Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan

The White Company, accompanied by a signed handwritten letter by the author to the American magazine publisher, S. S. McClure, 1891

Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan. The White Company, accompanied by a signed handwritten letter by the author to the American magazine publisher, S. S. McClure In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1891. London. Beautifully housed first edition set of Doyle's early historical novel -- a Medieval romance -- one of his two most popular non-Sherlock works, and accompanied by a substantive letter by Doyle to the publisher McClure regarding the novel. 8vo. 19.5 by 13 cm. The letter, dated December 5th, 1894, was written on an American visit, and he wrote on the stationary of the Aldine Club at 75 Fifth Avenue. The letter reads: "When Balestier bought "the White Company" from me he paid 125 pounds, of which 60 pounds was for serial right, and the rest was an advance on a ten per cent royalty. I have now, I find, to prove this latter point, for the London books have all been lost. have you any recollection in your dealing with Balestier of hearing him mention the matter. You might let me have 20 pounds before I leave otherwise it will get mixed up with Watts account. Looking forward to seeing you all. Yours very cordially, A Conan Doyle." The volumes of the book itself are bound in the original blindstamped red cloth. The first volume is cocked slightly, and all the volumes' cloth has soiling and fading. Other than a minor chip to the endpaper of the first volume, the interiors are clean. The quarter morocco slipcases are very handsome. The first volume's spine notes, in gilt, the presence of the ALS letter. These slipcases and their chemises have trivial wear. Very Good. Cloth. Quarter Morocco Clamshell Boxes and Cloth Chemises for each volume. (#005356)
