2 volumes Roy8vo (6 x 9in., 150 x 235mm) nicely bound in full contemporary calf, gilt, backstrips gilt in panels, with raised bands, red and green labels 1 rear cover slightly ink marked, but a handsone pair. 62 hand-coloured steel-engraved plates (5 uncoloured), INCLUDING 16 OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, SOME AFTER GEORGE CATLIN, most being single portraits of chiefs or warriors, a couple of group portraits. Also includes plates of South American races, Africans, Asian, Pacific Islanders etc.. 4th and Best Edition which is considerably enlarged and has the most plates.

Folio (11 1/2 x 18 1/2 ins, 290 x 470mm) later black cloth-backed marbled boards. pp3 explanation - lower edge just bumped - (no title page seems to be required), 6 large hand-coloured fold-out engraved maps showing ethnic groupings 29 x 24 ins (750 x 600mm), or 22 x 32 ins (560 x 815mm), mounted on large guards. 2 maps (N and S America) with slight tears to foot of edges of margin, a couple of professional repairs to versos, probably done at the time of binding.
