All Errata leaves present. Preface in vol 1 dated June 1, 1776. The engraved frontis portrait of Gibbon by John Hall after Joshua Reynolds in vol. 1 is dated " ... Febry 1st. 1780. ..... , " it was originally issued with volume 2 , in this set it has been bound into volume 1 at some time. The three maps are by Thomas Kitchen Snr. and are dated January, 11,1781. Occasional sporadic light spotting and dusting at the start and end of each volume does not detract from the overall clean and bright condition of the contents. Small almost imperceptible tear in the title-page of vol.3 not affecting the text. Contemporay calf very lightly rubbed, sometime expertly rebacked, the spines with five raised bands and contrasting red and dark green title and volume labels respectively, each panel with a gilt decoration incoprorating a sword, shield, Roman Eagle, and Centurion's helmet. Contemporary marbled endpapers. Overall a very good, attractive near fine set. This 6 volume quarto set is Gibbon's " Masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style [ which ] has remained one of the ageless historical works ..... . " When first published the first edition of one thousand copies was sold within a fortnight, the chronology of publication and issue points are amply explained in Norton's " A Bibliography of the works of Edward Gibbon, " OUP. 1970, pages 36 - 176.
