The Fortunate Mistress: or, A History of the Life and Vast Variety of Fortunes of Mademoiselle de Beleau, Afterwards Call'd the Countess de Wintselsheim, in Germany. Being the Person known by the Name of Lady Roxana, in the Time of King Charles II., 1724

Defoe, Daniel. The Fortunate Mistress: or, A History of the Life and Vast Variety of Fortunes of Mademoiselle de Beleau, Afterwards Call'd the Countess de Wintselsheim, in Germany. Being the Person known by the Name of Lady Roxana, in the Time of King Charles II. London: T, Warner; W. Meadows; W. Pepper; S. Harding; T. Edlin, 1724. First Edition. 8vo. [6], 407 pp. Frontis plate portrait of the heroine. Scarce first edition of Defoe's "picaresque" novel told by a woman who rises from the gutter to the pinnacle of Restoration society, begetting children here, there and everywhere along the way. Similar to, if less well-known than, Moll Flanders, except here the anti-heroine is entirely remorseless, heartless and amoral, all qualities that make her dense narrative all the more arresting. Scarce in commerce. No copies of the first edition are known to have come up at auction since the 1970s. Joints and spine head restored. Leaves heavily age toned. Some blackening of the gilt edging. Very Good Plus. Full Mottled Calf. (#005532)
