Weinberg, Steven

The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe., New York: Basic Books, 1977 1977

Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, red top-stain. With the dust jacket. Top-stain slightly faded. A superb copy in the jacket with only a very tiny nick at the base of the spine panel.

First edition, first printing. A beautiful copy of this science classic, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "With best wishes, Steven Weinberg". Weinberg is one of the most important high-energy physicists working today, the winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics for his electroweak theory, which unified our understanding of two of the fundamental forces: electromagnetism and the nuclear weak force. Weinberg's technical books are among the most influential in the field, and this volume was the first he wrote for a general audience. It explains the origin of the universe with "clarity, vividness, and great scientific accuracy" (T. D. Lee, Physics Nobel Laureate), and prompted Isaac Asimov to comment that, "The book is the first I have seen to put the details, both historical and conceptual, of the origin of the Universe within the grasp of the general reader. As such, it is a tremendous service to us all. I have come across references to the early history of the Universe here and there, but never realized how clearly it was the result of specific observation and careful calculation until I read this book. What I had thought to be the guesswork and semi-mysticism of scientists turns out to be nothing of the sort and you have no idea how wonderful that makes me feel".
