Unique set of five contemporarily issued editions of Arthur Koestler's very influential second book - his key account of his personal experiences of the Spanish Civil War, including being imprisoned under sentence of death. Two volumes signed.

Arthur Koestler

Spanish Testament (5 vols. - Five editions.), Gollancz; London; Left Book Club; plus unidentified printers in Paris & Prague. 1937

Arthur Koestler, subsequently imprisoned for over three months under sentence of death, had entered Spain under the credentials of a News Chronicle journalist. He was among the first to document evidence and report back the facts of a German military presence in Spain and their overt provision of armaments - while Hitler was claiming a non-interventionist policy.

Note
His experience and victimization under a totalitarian regime was transposed subsequently for his classic dystopia 'Darkness at Noon' [1940]

The three very scarce editions with graphic wrappers (issued in French, German and Czech) are illustrated with shocking black & white photographs, not included in the British printings, of the urban destruction and civilian deaths perpetrated by General Franco's Nationalist forces.

Quote
"Of the greatest psychological interest, probably one of the most honest and unusual documents to be produced by the Spanish War" - George Orwell ['Time & Tide' in 1938; 'Critical Essays' in 1946]

Illustrated
Photographs in the three wrappered issues
