1869 - Archers' Certificate with Seal - Scotland

Royal Company of Archers - The Queen's Bodyguard in Scotland , [ 1869 ]

Edinburgh, 19 June 1869. Membership certificate to the Royal Company of Archers, issued to British politician Lord George Francis Hamilton, a printed document completed in manuscript, with the original double-sided red wax seal in remarkable condition and contained in its round tin clamshell case, fastened to the document with a forest green satin ribbon. Document measures 28 x 35 cm. Seal measures approximately 5,5 cm in diameter. Round tin box measures 6 cm in diameter. Housed in a recent purpose-made grey cloth clamshell box measuring 40 x 37,5 x 3,5 cm, for extra protection.

The Royal Company of Archers was privately established in the seventeenth century, made into a Royal Company by Queen Anne in 1704. Consisting largely of Lords, Barons, and notable men, the company was given an important role in 1822 during the reign of King George IV - to provide a personal bodyguard to the King on his visit to Scotland. Its membership remains privy to the high ranking and upper class, including senior military officers, politicians, and nobles. Today it is a ceremonial unit which continues to serves as the Sovereign's Bodyguard in Scotland, and now known as the Queen's Bodyguard For Scotland.

Lord George Francis Hamilton, GCSI PC JP (1845-1927) was a British Conservative and Unionist Party politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who served as First Lord of the Admiralty and Secretary of State for India. He served with the Rifle Brigade and Coldstream Guards, achieving the rank of lieutenant. He began his political career as was Member of Parliament for Middlesex between in 1868. According to this document, he became a member of the Royal Company of Archers the following year.
