X Scarce Colorful Concertina

Raccolta di Scelti Costumi del Carnevale di Roma, c.1830

Raccolta di Scelti Costumi del Carnevale di Roma. . Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC First Search or elsewhere. N.d., circa 1830. Case, 9.5 by 6.5 cm. Leporello panels: 87 by 62 mm. 31 panels of hand-colored costume plates, including title showing an acrobatic carnival scene in the Piazza Navona. Characters include the classics such as Pagliaccio, Diavolo, Mago and Arlecchino; female counterparts to these characters; ethnic and regional types, including an Albanese, a Spagnolo, a Turco; and yet other stereotyped characters: Contadina, Conte, Brigante, etc. The hand-coloring is especially bright and vivid in this concertina, and a fair number of the characters are not merely blandly posed but are shown in motion, with expression, or somehow more dynamically. The spine of the leporello proper and the long side of the slipcase are chipped. The title panel has toning. Otherwise, clean. Very Good. Slipcase . (#005520)
