Second & Best English translation of Sir Isaac Newton's Principia

Vol 1 (all published), [15], (xvi-lviii), [23], [1], 2-360 pp, 22 pls (all folding), in contemporary calf boards, gilt edge tooling, some tip repairs. Professionally re-spined to style, raised bands, gilt tooling, titles in gilt to morocco labels. Internally, gilt board edge tooling, original red marbled endpapers with repair and small coat of arms label to fpd, mss notes to verso fep (1869 & 1889) stating bought at Thorp sale, mss note to half title (stating ExLib Robert Thorp bought at auction), contains, half title, list of subscribers and the dedication (often lacking in the later ed). Some minor foxing on title and elsewhere, 1 old paper repair.

Thorp, Church of England clergyman, later Arch Deacon of Durham and co founder of Durham University.
There was another English translation by Motte in 1729, and Newton published his Principia in 1687.
