Adolf Ecksteins Publishing House. Berlin-Charlottenburg. No date [c.1911]. Large folio [18 inches x 12 inches].
Title, [Preface] + 64 very fine photogravure portraits on India paper, each with a leaf of biography, and most with a facsimile signature within the plate-mark, 8 portraits lack the biographical text. Publisher’s extraordinary pictorial cloth on heavy, padded boards, the rear cover with a large damp-mark not affecting the interior, the front cover with a few small spots and streaks at the lower edge, joints firm, scattered foxing, top edges of the plates dusty because of the thickness of the paper, overall in good plus condition.
*The series of plates, ordered alphabetically, begins with George V and Queen Mary, followed by Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, followed by 60 contemporary eminents, all male, of whom 51 were physicians and surgeons, 2 were scientists, 3 military and 4 in law and politics. Most of the copies in UK academic libraries appear to differ one from the other, and they may well have been made up to order.
