Libro de Estampas Para Compradores de Jugueteria , 1925 - 1935

Libro de Estampas Para Compradores de Jugueteria [Our translation: A Picture Book for Toy Buyers, or a stab at German: Ein Bilderbuch fur Spielzeugkunden]. . Visually exciting German toy promotion issued in conjunction with the Leipzig trade fair (la Feria de Leipzig in Spanish, die Leipzige Messe in German). N.d., but late 1920s or early 1930s, based on the clothing, the bobbed hairstyles of the girls, and a general sense of the graphics. Oblong, 15 by 21 cm. Unpaginated, 32 pages, plus wraps. Virtually every page has a color illustration, not quite photo-like (think claymation), and a smaller sepia toned vignette accompanying the text which touts the virtues of German-made toys, not the least because of their educational value. Germany was at the time the foremost manufacturing source of toys, and Leipzig has a long history as a leading center for trade fairs, stretching back seven centuries. It remains to this day an important location for trade fairs. Louis Erich Gruner (1881-1966), who did the whimsical cover illustration, was a painter, graphic artist, caricaturist and book illustrator from Leipzig. We do not know who was responsible for the two sets of interior illustrations -- the color or sepia series -- both of which are stylistically very different from the cover art and also from each other. Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC First Search at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut. We endeavored also to locate copies in other languages, based on the assumption that the same promotion would have been translated into French, English, etc., to no avail. Granted, to find translations required some guesswork regarding the title, etc., and so we expect we missed such copies. (#004990)
