RACY AND RARE

LE PETIT POLISSON ou Le Chanteur Joyeux par Mr Libertini. , À Polissoneopolis chez Roger-bon temps Md de droleries, Ruë de la Gayeté … [1780s?].

8vo (191 × 117 mm), ff. [37]; engraved throughout; some light spotting/browning, a little insect damage in the fore-margin of some leaves; modern quarter calf, spine lettered gilt.

Note
A very rare compilation, comprising 18 songs, some with guitar accompaniment. A couple of the songs are attributed to a composer (Alberti, Albanese), but most are anonymous, many of them being well-known tunes. All, however, are what the French call galant (i.e. racy). Each song is printed across two facing pages, and the book almost has a feel of someone bringing together a sheaf of slip-songs and publishing them, albeit anonymously, under a collective title-page.

RISM Recueils, p. 284, locating the Bibliothèque nationale copy only (pp. 28, so fourteen songs, the sole copy listed in WorldCat). Not in Gay, but cf. III, 700 for a similarly-titled work (also listed in RISM).
