DICKENS

Fine Autograph Letter Signed in full with a flourish to H. P. Smith (Charles, 1812-1870, Novelist), 1848

saying that he will “incontinent proceed to the scratch and underwrite Sir Archer Denman Croft. I should say he was a highly sensible man, though that instance of his judiciousness which you send me is not a special one - the case being so clear. And I will not forget the Italian letters ...” sending love from all in Marylebone, “to all the Eagle brood”, 2 sides 8vo., Devonshire Terrace, 15th February

Note
H. P. Smith was for many years an actuary with the Eagle Life Assurance Company. From dealing with Dickens's insurance he became his close friend and was godfather to Dickens's son Sydney. Sir Archer Denman Croft, (1801-1865, 8th Baronet of Croft, Herefordshire), was among other things a director of The General Reversionary and Investment Company. The company dealt in the present value of such interests as a life insurance policy, and therefore Croft's 'judiciousness' was of great importance to an actuary such as Smith.
