NIELSEN, Kay

EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON - First Edition - 5 of 500 Deluxe Copies Signed by Nielsen, 1914

First edition. Number 5 of 500 Deluxe copies SIGNED by Nielsen. Publisher's vellum with gilt lettering and gilt decorative panel with blue border. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Silk ties detached. Pictorial endpapers illustrated in black silhouettes and gold designs. Twenty-five colour plates mounted on Japon, all perfect, under their captioned tissue guards. There are also a number of black and white drawings, chapter headings and decorative borders. A fine, bright copy in slightly worn original slipcase.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon represents Nielsen’s “pièce de resistance” in book illustration. His illustrations are very striking, leaving a lasting impression, and combined with the luxury of the book’s production form a breathtaking result. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration, this is a great rarity, especially in this wonderful original condition.
