HUGHES, Ted

Crow, Faber 1970

8vo, pp. 80. Original black boards, lettered in gilt to spine.

Note
First edition, INSCRIBED AND WITH A SPECTACULAR ILLUSTRATION BY THE AUTHOR TO FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: 'To Mike -- defender | on the right flank -- | a sitting crow starves | a flying crow eats anything + gets sick. | Best be not a crow. | from | Ted | 11th October 1970'. The whole encased in an ink drawing of a crow rampant, with another, dead crow to bottom left.

The recipient was Michael Henshaw, Hughes' accountant. Henshaw's client list included many British and American literary names of the late twentieth century, among them Ted Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Loach, Monty Python (all of them), Alexander Trocchi, Simon Gray and David Hare. Jean Rhys was also a client: according to Diana Athill, Sonia Orwell had recommended Henshaw to her '...on the grounds that he liked good writing and drank a lot.' Henshaw's unorthodox -- some might say inventive -- approach to the finer points of book-keeping ensured frequent run-ins with the Inland Revenue, but his willingness to accept manuscripts and signed books as payment, combined with his almost limitless interpretation of the term 'professional expense', kept his extensive client list loyal.
