World - Beaver Map

Chatelain, Henri Abraham (1684 – 1743)

Carte Tres Curieuse de la Mer du Sud..., 1719

Chatelain Amsterdam 1719
copper engraved map on four joined sheets with recent hand colouring., in dark wooden frame. frame 100 x 1600 cm, plate 78 x 140 cm. Four sheets joined together; paper added to margin for framing purpose; exc. cond.

Engraved by Chatelain from his 7 volume ‘Atlas Historique’. One of the most spectacular maps showing the Western hemisphere with the American continent in the middle, Europe and Africa to its right and Japan, China and the outline of Australia to the left. The map shows various trade and exploration routes in the Pacific and Atlantic as well as depictions of explorers, beavers and fisheries and various other vignettes. California is depicted as an island – a misconception that was nurtured in the 17th and 18th c despite evidence to the contrary – which makes this map desirable not only for the collector of map curiosa but also for anyone who wishes to enrich his office or home with a beautiful piece of history.
