First edition in English. 8vo. ( 193mm. ) Pp. [2], 1 - 400, 16 publisher's catalogue. Contents generally clean, bright, crisp and tight., very light waterstaining to the publisher's catalogue. Title-page within a double rule frame, the 16 page publisher's catalogue at the the end is not noted in the ESTC citation. Sometime expertly rebound ( 20th Century ? ) in half speckled calf over marbled paper backed boards, the spine with five raised bands and red morocco title label, publication date stamped directly in gilt at toe of spine. New endpaper's. Overall a very good copy Boerhaave, Hermann ( 1668 - 1738 ) was a professor of medicine and botany from 1709, and of chemistry from 1718, at the University of Leyden. He was the most distinguished teacher of his time, and a man of immense and varied learning, in languages, philosophy, theology, mathematics, botany, and chemistry " - Lindeboom p.112. Boerhaave first published his " Aphorisimi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis " in 1708 / 1709. The book is a number of formal statements relating to the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, however, no exact prescriptions are given. " The Aphorisms represent one of Boerhaave's best works " - Garrison and Morton p.347. This first edition in English is rare, and is not well held institutionally in the UK, ESTC ( on-line 2 / 17 ) locates only 2 ( actually 3 ) copies, neither with the 16 page cataloge at the end - John Rylands Library, Manchester. Wellcome Institute, London. The ESTC also locates a copy at the the British Library, ESTC, T84586, dated " MDCCXV [ 1725. ] " - the BL Catalogue ( on-line 2 / 17 ) gives the date 1715. ESTC N15473.
