AFRICA (CONTINENT)

Hondius, J. / J. Janssonius

‘AFRICAE NOVA TABULA. Auct. Jud. Hondio’, 1632

Map of the continent of Africa with five images of natives in local costumes down each side and six views of cities along the top. Two cartouches, sailing ships, sea monsters and wild animals on the continent. After the plate by Jodocus Hondius published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1632, 41 x 56 cm. German text verso. Full contemporary colour.

Note
The first Africa map by Hondius of 1606 was re-engraved and reissued in 1623, ‘with the costume figures reversed, and the imprint added within a large cartouche surmounted by a clock and a death’s head...’ and then ‘...published again in 1632, with the bottom border [originally containing also six city views] omitted’. This is the uncommon map offered here.
